studiosh is a small architectural practice based in south-west London. We work throughout the UK offering architectural, bespoke joinery and interior design services. The practice was established by Stephen Hunt in 2016.

Our projects vary in scale and complexity from new-build, one-off houses to extensions and whole-house refurbishments. We specialise in creating thoughtful and considered residential schemes. Our proposals are embedded in an understanding of site and context and we always seek to maximise the potential of any commission. We offer a full service from conception through to completion.

We have a particular interest in unusual, dated and characterful dwellings where our diligent approach and process can make a real difference to the comfort and performance of even the most challenging properties.

Our process is collaborative, working closely with clients, consultants and trades, we conceive coherent well articulated buildings. Our rigorous development of detail and specification results in well crafted, sustainable buildings that are unique and personal.

We have experience working on listed buildings, within conservation areas and in sensitive settings such as areas of outstanding natural beauty.

We are an RIBA Chartered Practice and our director, Stephen Hunt is a Chartered Member of both the RIBA and ARB.

In 2018 studiosh were engaged for the extensive remodelling and upgrade of this 1930’s semi-detached property. The existing dwelling suffered from numerous ad-hoc extensions, the interiors were dated and the configuration was impractical. The proposals sought to reinvigorate the ground floor; to provide a generous kitchen and living space with an expansive relationship with the garden. A loft conversion provides a new master bedroom suite accessed by an open staircase with a large picture window offering a generous aspect.

Externally, robust materials; burnished blockwork, oak and pigmented zinc are thoughtfully composed in strong forms, punctuated by generous glazing. The ribbed blockwork, fenestrations and cladding provide a rhythm to the facade, breaking down the mass and softening the scale. Elements of oak joinery throughout the scheme consolidate the spaces; from the ground floor glazing, connecting through the staircase and culminating in the loft picture window.

The interiors finishes are ‘quiet’; white oiled oak floors and subtly variegated tiling provide a calming backdrop. Oak framed views out to the garden and a large sliding door gives access to a generous patio flanked by a pond. A planter sits below the fixed glazing of the kitchen, buffering the threshold between the house, patio and the garden. The open plan layout allows for a generous, flowing interior while views of the changing seasons illuminate the interior.

The project scope presented the opportunity to upgrade the existing fabric of the building. External wall insulation has been applied to the flank wall. The roof and suspended timber floors have also been upgraded. Services have been modernised throughout with new LED lighting and heating replacing dated inefficient systems, fixtures and fittings.

The interiors are clean and simple; conceived as a backdrop to the garden. The general aesthetic is that of a soft minimalism, a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.
